The Social House Again

The new trustees believed that the social life of the house could not be neglected. They believed that their “perfect” restoration should be used. To get to know one another better and to raise interest and money for the restoration, the board held grand social events.124 The board replaced annual educational membership meetings held on Mark Twain's birthday with elaborate balls and waltzes in the house. Sometimes costumed affairs, pictures of these events flooded the Hartford Courant's society page. Attendees drank cocktails and smoked cigars in the house. The board members' interest in restoring the house did not preclude their enjoyment of it. For the public, they added an annual frog jumping contest and other programs.125 By 1959, their fund-raising appeals and events had earned enough money to pay off the last remaining portion of the 1929 mortgage. That year the annual board and members meeting culminated in a mortgage burning ceremony inside the house.
